Why NYC Parents Keep Choosing MakeInspires for After-School and Summer STEAM Programs

With hundreds of enrichment options in the New York Metro Area, how do parents choose? After 15 years and 20,000+ students, here is what consistently brings families back to MakeInspires.

THE AFTER-SCHOOL DECISION

Every fall, parents in the New York Metro Area face the same question: what should my child do after school? The options are endless — tutoring, sports, music, coding classes, art programs. It is a real decision with real stakes, because the hours after school are some of the most formative a child has.

At MakeInspires, we have been part of that decision for 15 years across five locations in Mamaroneck, Chappaqua, Brooklyn, the Upper East Side, and Darien, CT. We have seen thousands of families choose us, return semester after semester, and tell us what made the difference. Here is what they say.

WHY FAMILIES KEEP COMING BACK

Children build things they are proud of — every single session

In most after-school settings, children consume content. At MakeInspires, they produce it. Every class ends with something made: a 3D-printed object, a working robot, a coded game, a functioning circuit. That tangible outcome does something powerful — it gives children a reason to come back and show someone what they did.

The A in STEAM is not an afterthought

MakeInspires is a STEAM program, not just a STEM one. The arts are woven into every curriculum, not bolted on. That means a child designing a 3D print is thinking about proportion and aesthetics, not just tolerances. A child building a robot is thinking about how it moves, not just whether it moves. This integration keeps creative children engaged and gives analytical children a new way to think.

Programs grow with the child, not against them

With 60+ original curricula spanning 3D printing, robotics, coding, digital design, engineering, and more, there is always a next level. Children who start with us in second grade are still discovering new programs in seventh grade. That depth of programming is rare, and it is why our return rate sits at 96% — one of the numbers we are most proud of.

Instructors who are makers themselves

Our 80+ instructors across all five locations were not hired to recite a curriculum. They are engineers, designers, coders, and builders who chose to work with children because they love both things. That passion is visible in every class, and children respond to it. When a child asks "but what if I tried it this way?" the answer at MakeInspires is always "let's find out."

Neurodiverse and differently-wired learners thrive here

Hands-on, project-based learning is not just more engaging — for many children, it is the environment where they finally click. We have seen children who struggled in traditional classroom settings find their confidence at a 3D printer or a circuit board. Our Mamaroneck team in particular has deep expertise in designing inclusive, high-energy spaces where neurodiverse learners can excel.

A community, not just a class

Children at MakeInspires find their people. The workshops are collaborative by design — children work alongside each other, troubleshoot together, and celebrate each other's projects. Over semesters, those bonds deepen. For many families, MakeInspires is not just an after-school program. It is a community their child belongs to.

WHAT PARENTS TELL US

"Growing up in Mamaroneck, MakeInspires sparked my curiosity in science and engineering — an intrigue that carried far beyond the classroom. That foundation led me to MIT's Aero/Astro department, and I returned to teach at MakeInspires between undergraduate years to give back."

Oliver Rayner, Draper Scholar, MIT doctoral candidate — Mamaroneck alumnus

Oliver's story is exceptional. But the pattern behind it is not. Across 15 years of after-school and enrichment programs, we see the same thing again and again: children who are trusted to build things start to trust themselves. That confidence follows them into the classroom, into high school, and beyond.

STEM vs. STEAM — what is the difference?

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. STEAM adds the Arts — design, creativity, and visual thinking — to that foundation. At MakeInspires, we believe the Arts are not optional. Travis Sluss, MakeInspires Founder, comes from an arts background, producing concerts and albums for over a decade. The best engineers think like designers. The best coders think like storytellers. STEAM education reflects the way innovation actually works in the real world, and it produces children who are not just technically capable, but genuinely creative.

Find the right program for your child

We have locations in Mamaroneck, Chappaqua, Brooklyn, the Upper East Side, and Darien, CT, with programs for children from Pre-K through high school. After-school enrollment is open now.
