Greetings, fellow makers, tinkerers, and visionaries! I am thrilled to extend a warm welcome to you as we embark on an exciting journey of discovery, innovation, and endless possibilities. My name is Sarah, and I have the distinct privilege of serving as the Assistant Manager at the captivating Makerspace nestled right here in the heart of Mamaroneck.
Thank you for reading our first blog post. 🙂 At MakeInspires, we aim to inspire life-long learners through fun, hands-on STEAM programming and we hope that our blog will assist us in this undertaking. STEAM is a relatively new concept in education, so here’s a quick explanation for those who haven’t heard of it, and a refresher for those who have:
STEAM education expands upon the foundational principles of STEM education classes by seamlessly integrating the arts and humanities into the core curriculum. Stem education, which emphasizes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, is the foundation for STEAM education. STEAM education builds upon this STEM framework by infusing creative and artistic elements into the learning process, thereby encouraging innovation, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary collaboration. In essence, STEAM education harmoniously weaves together the rigor of STEM education classes with the imaginative and expressive capacities of the arts, resulting in a holistic and comprehensive educational experience.
Deirdre Dunham, our Chappaqua Makerspace Manager, shares what it means to her to be a maker in a STEAM Makerspace:
“To make is more than just a physical process, it’s more of a philosophy and ethos than about the final product. At MakeInspires, kids get to explore making in all of its forms. We make community within our classes, we make discoveries in our education, and yeah… we also make some pretty cool stuff too from 3D prints, to generative code!”
Deirdre is one of our five management team members. In upcoming blog posts, you’ll be introduced to the rest of our full-time team, including: Myself, Mamaroneck Manager Assistant, Travis Sluss, Founder and CEO, and Caleb Boardman. So welcome, curious and crafty folks, to our MakeInspires community, feel free to introduce yourself at one of our three locations, or email us at education@makeinspires.com. Whether you’re an engineer, a painter, scientist, computer nerd, parent, student, teacher, amateur coder, 3D printing enthusiast, or the next Steve Jobs: you are welcome here.
